Making a somewhat hydroponic’s system?

I have two 20 gallon aquariums on a stand, the bottom aquarium is not being used.
I decided to make the bottom aquarium as like one of those giant filters, also a place where I could grow plants…

What you are trying to make is called a sump refugium.

You will need an overflow of some sort on the top tank, and a bit stronger pump for the bottom.

When you look at pumps, you will see 2 ratings. One is how much water it pumps, gal/hr. The other is Head, that is how high it will pump the water. It may be 3ft, 6 ft, 9ft etc. If your pump only has a 3ft head, thats enough to pump water around the tank, but it wont reach the top tank.
