How to landscape backyard.?

We have a yard that’s got sandy soil, weeds. We want to do some landscaping. Do we have to kill the weeks first or can we just till them under before adding any new soil etc?

It depends what kinds of weeds you’ve got. If they are perennial ones such as bindweed, nettles, ground elder etc, you’ll need to dig out all the roots carefully, rather than rotovate the area, because if you chop them up into little bits the pieces will act as cuttings and the weeds will come back all over the place. If you’re sure all the weeds are annuals you can till them in, but in either case, be prepared for weed seeds to germinate like mad in the newly-disturbed soil, however well you prepare the ground. However, they won’t be so hard to deal with as if you hadn’t dug out the main roots carefully first. I know it sounds a bore, but there really is no alternative to proper soil preparation if you’re making changes to your garden which will give you pleasure for many years in a job well done. I wouldn’t advise using weedkiller, for one thing it doesn’t work properly until the weather warms up and the weeds are actively growing, for another thing it’s highly toxic to you and your soil, and thirdly it’s an unnecessary expense.
